How to use Tare-It
Tare-It recipes are written as baker's percentages. The key ingredient (like the flour in a bread recipe) is always 100%. Every other ingredient is a percentage of the main ingredient, by weight: water could be 70% in a bread recipe, for example. This gives you important information about the composition of the ingredients relative to each other. 70% water means 70% hydration in a bread recipe, which tells you how loose or firm the dough will be!
We take this a couple of steps further and apply baker's percentages to non-baking recipes. If you prefer to see recipe ingredients as a flat percentage of the total weight, there's a toggle for that in Settings (global), at the top of the Browse pane, and on each recipe.
To tare in baking is to reset the scale to zero so that you can weigh the next ingredient. Hence the name.
App functionality
You can access recipes without an account, but signing up for a free account lets you favorite the ones you like, review recipes, and save recipes to your Make soon list. The Make soon button on a recipe is a toggle: tap it once to add the recipe to your list, and tap it again to remove it. You can also remove recipes from your Make soon list by tapping the ✕ on them in the Make soon display, accessible via the menu.
Choose your display settings
Open the menu and expand Settings to set your preferences across the site. These choices are saved in your current browser.
- Units: switch between Metric (grams) and US (ounces). Turn Large batch? on to use kilograms or pounds for larger amounts.
- Ingredient %: choose baker's % to show amounts relative to the key ingredient, or % total to show each ingredient's share of the whole recipe. This sets your default across recipes; you can also switch the display within a recipe.
- Show calories: choose On or Off to show or hide calories across the site.
These settings change how recipes are displayed, without changing the recipes themselves.
Premium features
Upgrading to Premium gives you the ability to tweak recipes in-app, changing ingredient amounts or adding ingredients and rating each version in a version history, or to create new weight-based recipes. These are all stored under My Cookbook in the menu for easy access! Your versions and version ratings are private, though you can share a custom recipe if you like with the Share button.
Build your grocery list Premium
Your private Grocery List combines ingredients from your Make Soon recipes and keeps your other groceries handy.
- Open a recipe, choose the version and ingredient options you want, and scale it to the amount you plan to make. Tap Make soon to save those ingredient amounts to your list.
- Open Grocery list from the menu, or tap Grocery List in the bottom navigation on your phone. Ingredients from your Make Soon recipes are combined, with quantities added together and items grouped by grocery section.
- Check off ingredients you already have or pick up while shopping. Checked items move into Got it; expand it to uncheck an item.
- Under Other groceries, tap Add for regular purchases such as bread and milk. Choose a grocery section, then check items off as you buy them. Use Uncheck all inside Got it to reuse this list for your next trip.
Make Soon keeps the amounts you saved when you added the recipe. To change them, remove the recipe from Make Soon, adjust its scale or ingredients, and add it again. Removing a recipe also removes its contribution to the grocery list; your other groceries stay on the list.
